Overdone it on the sherry trifle, have we?

Hey; it happens to the best of us. Whether you’ve hit the spiced beef like a caged carnivore or consumed your weight in goose fat roasted potatoes, chances are your poor digestive system has taken a bashing.

Rich and indulgent foods are no friend of your gut so expect your stomach to retaliate with bloating and general discomfort until you’ve learned you lesson.

In the meantime, here’s a few natural indigestion remedies to try (because we know you’re likely gearing up for Round Two at the leftovers buffet). Next time spend a few more minutes chewing every bite and swap the wine for water…

1. Walk it off: While the advice is to stay seated for 20 minutes after eating to allow your digestion system to get to work, a gentle stroll is just the ticket to ease discomfort.

2. Loosen up: Unless you’re trying to make a great first impression with your in-laws, ditch the belt (and possibly the smart trousers) after dinner. Tight clothing puts pressure on your stomach and stops its natural movement, worsening indigestion. Oh and remove the Spanx before you tuck in.

3. Soda saviour: Add a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water and squeeze in a few drops of fresh lemon juice. Sipped slowly, the mixture helps to dispel gas in the stomach and relieve bloating.

4. Order a cider (vinegar): Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with a small cup of warm water and drink it.

5. Sweeten the deal: Yogurt contains the good bacteria the digestive system needs to function. Mix a teaspoon of anti-bacterial Manuka honey into two tablespoons of natural yogurt and consume.

6. Make a brew: Brew up a pot of ginger or chamomile tea. Both of these herbs calm stomach spasms and help digestion. They also taste nice and help keep you hydrated.

7. Pop a peppermint: Two peppermint capsules taken with a glass of water may help get your colon moving. Avoid this one if you suffer from heartburn.

8. Chew some gum: The action of chewing any type of chewing gum stimulates the secretion of gastric juices, which can boost your digestion.

9. Sprinkle some cinnamon: Happily, cinnamon is usually in good supply at this time of year. Sprinkle a little in your coffee, studies show it contains properties that could relieve cramps, flatulence, indigestion, heartburn and nausea.
